Please be informed that, effective from 1 January 2026, the European Union EmissionsTrading System (EU ETS) will cover 100 % of CO₂-equivalent (CO₂e) emissions from maritime transport. This development is part of the European Union’s broader strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance sustainable shipping practices.
Key Details
- Full Emission Coverage
Shipping companies will be required to purchase emission allowances for all verified greenhouse gas emissions from voyages within the European Economic Area (EEA), as well as 50 % of emissions from voyages between EEA and non-EEA ports. - Expanded Scope of Gases
From the beginning of 2026 the ETS calculation methodology will include methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O), in addition to carbon dioxide (CO₂). - Impact on Costs
The inclusion of additional greenhouse gases and full emission coverage will result in higher ETS-related costs.
