EU ETS changes effective from 1 January 2026
by Maj-Len Ehrnrooth | 17 November, 2025

Please be informed that, effective from 1 January 2026, the European Union EmissionsTrading System (EU ETS) will cover 100 % of CO₂-equivalent (CO₂e) emissions from maritime transport. This development is part of the European Union’s broader strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance sustainable shipping practices.

Key Details

  1.       Full Emission Coverage
Shipping companies will be required to purchase emission allowances for all verified greenhouse gas emissions from voyages within the European Economic Area (EEA), as well as 50 % of emissions from voyages between EEA and non-EEA ports.

  2. Expanded Scope of Gases
From the beginning of 2026 the ETS calculation methodology will include methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O), in addition to carbon dioxide (CO₂).

  3. Impact on Costs
The inclusion of additional greenhouse gases and full emission coverage will result in higher ETS-related costs.
